[JULI MCSHAY THE HOUSTON CIVICS LEADERSHIP CAMPAIGN SCHOOL] Today at the Texas Southern University Barbara Jordan & Mickey Leland School Of Public Affairs, Founder of The Houston Civics and Leadership Campaign School Juli McShay, will host what she’s calling “a family centered community event” in which various notable speakers will be engaging the public, specifically the attending youth of this event about not only the importance of voting but also what they can do in order to amplify their voices in the community. This event is sponsored by the NAACP, the Houston Voting Initiative, the RSR “Run Sister Run”, Pure Justice, and the Cognitive Justice organization. It should be noted that Special Guest Speaker Congressman Christian Menefee will also deliver an address to those in attendance for today's event.
According to the Press Release this event was “inspired by the trial faced by Karmelo Anthony and the tragic deaths of Nolan Wells, the “It’s On Us Summit” has been created to equip families, both parents and youth with tools, resources, and the information for navigating social justice.” During today's community engagement event, talks will be held about the state of the criminal justice system and how it pertains to the youth. This multi blocked community outreach session will start promptly at 11am and will continue until 2pm at the Texas Southern University located at 3401 Cleburne Street, Houston, Texas 77004.
Today’s session will include topics pertaining to voting, self-regulation, split second decision making, the criminal justice system and a town hall meeting with subject matter experts Nicholas Little, Selena Braye, Angel Carroll, Joy Davis, Durrell Douglas, Hon. Mike Fields, Pamiel Gaskin, Hon. Jolonda Jones Tx 147, Dajauneke Minor, Deric Muhammad, Damion Walker, and John Wiggins III.
