[Me-Me Money Black Wall Street Houston Juneteenth] In celebration of the federally recognized American holiday of “Juneteenth”, June 19th, Houston residents celebrate what marks the commemoration of freed slaves in the states of Texas. What makes Juneteenth special is both the historical and cultural significance of the holiday. Not only is it the oldest celebration when it comes to celebrating the end of slavery, but Juneteenth is an American holiday that marks the day when Union Soldiers made way to Galveston Texas to inform the slaves in Texas that have been set free by the American federal government on June 19, 1865.
Juneteenth as a federal holiday was championed by the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee amongst other lawmakers and signed into law by former President Joe Biden on June 17th 2021. For Black Americans in Texas, Juneteenth carries a strong cultural significance that pushes and stands for the resilience Black Americans have demonstrated during both slavery and discrimination in America as well as their day of freedom from the rule of their slave masters.
We urge you to take the time out to hear from people, local celebrities, and Texas legislators who attended the “Black Wall Street Houston” event had to say about what Juneteenth means to them and how it has had an impact on Black American in the state of Texas.
