[NO KING'S PROTEST HOUSTON TEXAS] Today, as early as 9am, demonstrators and protestors of the “NO KINGS” national movement created by the “50501” Movement descended on the City Hall of Houston Texas. With well over 15,000 protesters assembling in unison against the Trump Administration's stance on immigration and the unprecedented deportation that have been placed in effect and carried out by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in conjunction with state, county, and city law enforcement agencies across the country.
While anti-immigration and anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles last week have turned violent towards law enforcement agencies in California with damage to police cruisers and various other forms of property; at least one person was killed. In contrast, the Houston 50501 protests were nonviolent in context. The 50501 Movement which was founded on the premise of holding 50 protests in 50 states under one moment are holding these mass protests today which marks both the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army and President Trump’s 79th who was born on June 14th, 1946.
During the Houston Texas 50501 NO KINGS protest, Texas state and local politicians and legislators spoke to the 15,000 plus crowd of protestors to not only express their solidarity with immigrants, but to send a message to the Trump Administrations in terms of their dissatisfaction of the Trump Administration political stance towards both the immigrants of America and of the actions of ICE which has been reportedly arresting immigrants and U.S. citizens alike.
Various military veterans and veteran organizations were in attendance and addressed what they perceive as the Trump Administration's misuse and overreach in terms of deploying the U.S. military to arrest American citizens. Protesters and demonstrators also expressed their distaste of the Trump Administration cutting off funding for social service programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP/EBT and other benefits and governmental subsidies.
Black and white Americans, Hispanic Americans, the members of the LGBTQ+ community all stood together under one voice and under one purpose and it seems like their voices are being heard in Washington D.C. as political representatives from Washington D.C. were not only present, but addressed demonstrations and protests during the two-hour protest. Chief of Houston Police Noe Diaz and Houston Mayor John Whitmire were also in attendance to observe the protest in real time.
