[2025 BRICS summit] Sunday marks the date of the 17th annual BRICS summit which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The theme for this year’s BRICS summit is “strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence”. It should be noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Putin were not able to attend this year’s BRICS summit. Russian president Putin attended via video messenger.

This year’s BRICS summit amassed roughly 4,000 attendees from 37 countries from around the world. BRICS which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa touched on several major key issues during the two-day summit which were: international trade, global investments, climate change, global health, the governance of artificial intelligence, multilateral peace and security, finance, and the continued growth and development of the BRICS member alliance.

Other nations that attended this year’s BRICS summit were Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the U.A.E. amongst other countries. during his address to BRICS member nations, Russian President Putin stated that:

“The unipolar system of international relations, which has been serving the interest of the so-called “golden billion”, is becoming a thing of the past, succeeded by a more just multipolar world”.

For those that have been watching the geopolitical chessboard for a while can easily see that is the case as many nations both inside and outside of the BRICS bloc are looking to diversify their payment systems and payment options. BRICS member states are Leading the way for this by encouraging each other to make payments via their own national currencies. Another global issue that is to be tackled at some point during the two-day BRICS summit are the Trump Administration's reciprocal tariffs.

The eyes of many countries that are seeking to obtain a seat within the BRICS bloc will be watching to see how BRICS member states will handle the ever-changing global issues of the day.
