On Thursday of last week, it was a great day for international women’s football (soccer). It was clear that the She Believes Cup is doing a great job at inspiring women and girls all over the world when it comes to playing the game of football. It can easily be said that both teams gave an electrifying performance on the pitch at the home of the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium located in downtown Houston Texas.
Fans of the USA team felt as if Columbia should have been penalized more for their role in roughhousing on the field; by roughhousing, we mean the aggressive pushing and pulling that occurred on the pitch. In contrast, fans of Columbia felt that both the USA team and their fans were “too soft” on the pitch and that they should play a more aggressive game. No matter which side you're on it was a great match-up.
When it comes to stats, USA took 10 shots while Columbia took 7 with 0 shots on target. Meanwhile the USA had 3 shots on target. The USA had significantly more time with the ball when it came to ball possession to the tune of 63% while Colombia had the ball 37% of the time. When it came to successful passes, USA had 501 successful passes, nearly double to Colombia’s 293.
When it boils down to pass accuracy, USA stood at 85% to Columbia’s 71%. Aggressiveness on the field was demonstrated by the number of fouls each team racked up with Columbia taking the lead with 14 fouls while USA didn’t fall too far behind with 12 fouls. Columbia also racked up 3 yellow cards, with neither team being issued any red cards. USA was caught offside 2 times and took 2 corners. Columbia had 4 corners and zero calls for being offsides.
USA defeated Columbia 2-0. Again, this was a great game and football fans around the world are looking forward to the next She Believes Cup.
