ACRES HOME CHAMBER CALLS FOR SUPPORT AS STATE-FUNDED PROGRAMS FACE POLITICAL HEADWINDS | ACRES HOME CHAMBER FOR BUSINESS AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (AHCBED)

[Acres Homes Chamber] The following is a Press Release from the Acres Home Chamber of Commerce located in Houston, Texas.

“Community Alert: Acres Home Chamber calls for support as state-funded programs face political headwinds

Houston, Texas — December 8, 2025 — The Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development (AHCBED) is calling for community support after the unexpected interruption of state appropriated funds that have helped to support the chamber’s mission for more than 25 years.

Although the chamber remains fully operational, delayed distribution of historically consistent funding raises concerns about the continuity of several 2026 programs. For decades, this support has enabled the chamber to provide free business services, host workforce programs, support small business growth, and strengthen one of Houston's most historic and culturally significant neighborhoods.

A funding freeze amid a shifting state landscape

The Acres Home Chamber has received this support since the late 1990s, when state leaders Sylvester Turner and John Whitmire championed the urban redevelopment and renewal appropriation to reinvest in communities like Acres Home—areas historically impacted by disinvestment and inequitable economic structures.

TSU has served as the legislatively designated fiduciary for this funding for more than two decades. However, the release of this year’s allocation has been paused, a decision occurring against the backdrop of heightened political scrutiny surrounding DEI initiatives statewide.

“This is bigger than a budget delay; it is a signal of the changing political priorities impacting longstanding community resources,” said Warren Fitzgerald Muhammad, Chairman & CEO of the Acres Home Chamber. “Despite these challenges, our commitment to Acres Home remains unwavering. While this delay presents challenges for our 2026 programming, the community can rest assured that our doors remain open and our mission continues.”

The chamber wants to emphasize that while this delay does not reflect a change in mission, performance, it is imperative that we as a community rally together to support this longstanding institution.

How the community can support during this transition

To ensure uninterrupted service into 2026, the chamber is inviting support through:

  • Corporate sponsorships – for organizations invested in strengthening Houston's economic landscape.

  • Direct donations – from supporters who believe in community revitalization and economic empowerment.

  • Community engagement – join us at the December 18 quarterly luncheon, where we will share updates and opportunities to get involved.

The December 20 farmers market, and on December 31 New Year’s Eve celebration fundraiser.
