[China Tropical Storm Maysak Guangxi] An estimated 130,000 people have been adversely impacted and relocated due to the severe flooding by Tropical Storm Maysak in the Guangxi region in southern China as 39 people have been killed. More deaths are expected to follow in the coming days. Thousands of rescuers have been deployed to Guanxi. This comes on the heels of Typhoon Bavi impacting Guam and other pacific islands, the aftermath of which caused several tornadoes to span in central China leading to the killing of 17 people. It was reported that a dam in Nanning was breached due to strenuous water flows and killed 26 people.
The Guangxi region received 4-16 inches (10-40cm) of rainfall with some places in the region reporting more than 35in (90cm) of rainfall since the devastating situation began. Floodwater has been seen receding, but the damage from the flooding continues to add up and take its toll on civilians and infrastructure. While more rain is predicted to fall in the next two days, it is expected that mud slides will occur. China, which is known for having some of the best engineers in the world, was able to restore power to just over 60,000 people on the last day.
While the restoration of power to civilians and their homes is positive, there is another negative and that negative is that animals have escaped from the zoo. The Chinese government has warned the public not to attempt to capture any of the animals as they “may be frightened and potentially aggressive”. They went on to inform the public “If you spot any of the animals, please keep a safe distance”.
