[Christian Menefee Al Green Texas Congressional District 18] With today being election day, there is no other highly prized congressional seat than that of the 18th Congressional District. This election for the 18th Congressional District will be one that I decided on age, experience, candidate outlook for the district, and of course voter turnout. While Congressman Al Green (D) is older but more has more experience than Christian Menefee (D), many voters within the 18th Congressional District have reported not only failing to see his relevance in 2026, but how his outlook for the future of the Congressional 18th District will most importantly put money into their pockets as many residents within the 18th Congressional District are facing job cuts, job insecurity, and lack of financial upward mobility.
With a median age of 33 and a median income level of roughly $37,000, speak volumes to the disparate need for not only better employment opportunities but also bigger pay checks. In Houston, where the average rental rate for a one-bedroom apartment stands at $47,000 at the low end, there's an estimated difference of $10,000 that needs to be accounted for by the residents of the 18th Congressional District. While neither candidate has actionable solutions, both candidates offer the same fundamental promises. For instance, both candidates support increasing the federal minimum wage. But increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 does nothing to offset the economic ramifications of the “Hidden Hand” of the market. In other words, an increase in minimum wage means an increase in general pricing to compensate for employers being forced to pay employees more.
In a survey conducted by the University of Houston Hobby School, 52% of voters who identify as Democrats are in favor of Congressman Menefee while 28% of those same voters favor Congressman Green. Congressman Menefee is outpacing Congressman Green in the polls by a 24% difference. The reason for this is not because of age or experience but because of the desire for political change. In the case of Congressman Green, older doesn’t mean relevance, but in the case of Congressman Menefee younger doesn't guarantee new results. Despite this it appears that voters are willing to gamble on a younger leader under the perceived guise of fresh ideas amid a generational shift in voting patterns.
The overarching determining factor boils down to political campaign contributions. With Congressman Al Green pulling in $940,155.88 in total receipts, he was overshadowed by Congressman Menefee who obtained $2,668,708.67, a difference of 1,728,552.79. in short, Congressmen Menefee not only has more financial backing in total, but he is also backed by multitude of stronger doners than Congressmen Al Green even through the international longshoremen association who donated to Congressman Al Green is a strong organization that holds significant power economically.
The demand for job security, in conjunction with Menefee having steeper pockets than Green, combined with a public drive for generational change marks the end of a great legacy. As this is nothing to be upset about, this is something not only to be expected but to be celebrated as a new generation of political leadership is emerging in these changing times.
