[2026 BLACK CAUCUS HOUSTON BLACK AMERICAN DEMOCRATS] Yesterday marked the second day for the 2026 DNC Black Caucus which was hosted by the Houston Black American Democrats (H-BAD) at the Wyndham Hotel near Houston’s Medical District. Top leadership and officials from within the DNC held various panels and breakout sessions that allowed attendees to ask questions in hopes of receiving answers to solve many of the issues and problems they face on the local, state, and federal levels. Top leadership from within the DNC that participated in yesterday's events included the likes of former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder Jr., Texas Congressmen Christian Menefee, Texas Representative Ron Reynolds, DNC Chair Virgie Rollins, DNC Vice-Chair Grace Carrington, DNC Chief of Staff William Anderson, Communications Workers of America Union President Claude Cummings Jr., and Reyna Morgan.
Top local officials within the DNC such as the Vice-President of the NAACP Nicholas Little, Councilwoman Arnetta Murry (Iowa Colony) and others were also in attendance and participated in answering many of the questions and addressing some of the concerns of the supporting residents of Houston. One of the biggest subjects besides women’s employment issues was how to address the historically low Voter turnout, specifically amongst younger Voters that has been adversely affecting both the DNC and GOP for the last decade across the country.
In the 2024 election, only 56.6% of Texas Voters headed to the polls to cast their votes which were below the national average of 64.1%, a 7.5% difference. Another topic that was discussed was the political phenomena of Black Male Voters crossing party lines and voting for President Trump and other key figures within the Republican Party during the 2024 election cycle. While some of the possible reasons why that phenomena occurred were provided during yesterdays, it has been argued that the DNC is still missing the mark when it comes to this specific issue. In the 2024 election 21% of Black American Men voted for President Trump an increase from 12% in the 2020 election. But that increase in voting for President Trump was not specific to Black American Men. In the same election cycle, 10% of Black American Women voted for President Trump as compared to 5% of Black American Women voting for President Trump in the 2020 election.
With voting starting in less than 4 weeks until Voter’s head to the polls next month, this mid-term election cycle may prove to be a difficult one for many Voters as they will have to decide not only which presidential candidate to vote for, but which party to align themselves with. With both the Trump Administration seeking another term and the DNC seeking to install their candidate of choice, the Republican Party seems to still have somewhat of a slight advantage over democrats by a slim margin. This is due to only 8% of the seats being competitive enough to attract Voters to head to the polls. In contrast, it's been widely documented that the advantage that many incumbents have had has not reached an all-time low and Voters appear to desire a robust candidate that speaks to the common everyday issues that they face.
