[Edwin Raymond New York Sheriff] With a nationwide push for more accountability in law enforcement, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently appointed NYPD lieutenant and Haitian American Edwin Raymond to the position of New York city Sheriff. Sheriff Edwin Raymond graduated from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and began his service in the New York Police Department at the age of 22 patrolling in the 77th Precinct and Transit District 32. Throughout his 15-year career, he has taken various opportunities to push back against both the misconduct within the New York Police Department, as well as the use of police quotas which has adversely affected New Yorkers. Sheriff Edwin Raymond has also been outspoken about introducing reform when it comes to policing and how New York Law Enforcement can do a better job at serving the people of New York. Sheriff Edwin Raymond hails from Brooklyn from two parents who are Haitian immigrants.
Prior to being promoted to the position of New York City Sheriff, Sheriff Edwin Raymond worked as a social justice liaison within the New York State Attorney General’s offices. Within that role he focused on increasing public trust when it came to pushing for greater accountability amongst law enforcement officers throughout the state. It should be noted that while employed as a Lieutenant within the New York Police Department, he served as a Commanding Officer within the Brooklyn North Community Affairs just before his retirement. Sheriff Edwin Raymond stated the following after being appointed to his new position as New York Sheriff:
“I look forward to continuing that work as Sheriff by helping build a safer, fairer and more accountable city for all New Yorkers.”
Endorsed by the NAACP for blowing the whistle on corruption within the New York Police Department, he also earned the praise of controversial New York Attorney General Letitia James who led an investigation into the Trump administration but fell short when she was accused of federal bank fraud and the submission of false statements for the purchase of a home in Norfolk, Virginia. As the new Sheriff for New York City, it was revealed that Sheriff Edwin Raymond would oversee property seizures, tax and court enforcement, and the illegal operating businesses within New York City.
