REMATCH: FC MONTERREY DEFEATS TOLUCA FC 2-1

[REMATCH TOLUCA FC MONTERREY] With tonight's rematch between CF Monterrey and Toluca FC at Shell Energy Stadium people from across the world have placed their bets. Out of 794 votes, the current win probability stands at Monterrey having a 43% chance of winning tonight's match just under Toluca’s 45% chance of winning tonight with a 12% chance of a draw; it appears to be a close one for the books. Looking at both teams head-to-head, it’s Toluca with not only the odds in their favor, but seven wins to Monterrey's 4 wins along with 4 draws between the two teams. Both teams appear to be playing well in the first half as CF Monterrey has taken several shots in attempt to score a goal but were unsuccessful due to Toluca FC’s ability to block, defend, and stop save.
While the first half of the match was considered to be “even tempered” between the two teams, there were some instances of aggressive play that resulted in the issuance of two yellow cards, the eight minute mark as well as the 26-minute mark. By the 32 minute, CF Monterrey missed yet another big chance to score a goal due to an inaccurate kick. Other ball deflections and interceptions by Toluca also played a major factor in diminishing CF Monterrey's ability to score a goal in the first half. CF Monterrey striker Uroš Đurđević took what many are calling a great shot at a goal which was on target at the 36’ minute of the match. Toluca FC followed up accordingly on the return but to secure a goal on the rotation.
Even with another big chance at the 40’ minute of the match FC Monterrey was again unable to secure a goal as another big chance presented itself. Toluca FC Goalie killed Monterrey’s chance of scoring by executing great blocking fundamentals. Despite losing to Toluca during the final round of the 2026 Leagues Cup, Monterrey was able to put considerable pressure on Toluca, however, Toluca was able to counter that pressure on the pitch by applying even greater pressure in the form of defense. At the 45’ minute of the match a verbal and somewhat physical altercation began to brew resulting in both teams exchanging soft blows in the form of push, pulls, and slaps ending the first half.
The fate of the match was thought to be sealed when Toluca scored the first goal of the match within seconds of the opening of the second half. Toluca continued playing with both a strong offense and defense as Monterrey somewhat struggled to keep up. This is despite them maintaining control throughout the second half. Monterrey could be seen chasing the trail left by Toluca. Just as in the first half, both teams appeared to continue to engage in aggressive tackling in the second half.
But just when the hopes of winning for the fans of Monterrey started to fade, FC Monterrey would score its first goal of the night at the 82’ minute effectively tying the match; then scoring again against Toluca at the 87' minute of the match – overtaking the lead. When it was all said and done, tonight's match proved that Toluca winning the 2026 Leagues Cup wasn't just a fluke or the luck of the draw, but they really do indeed have a great team. At the same time tonight's match up against FC Monterrey allowed them to not only redeem themselves in the eyes of the world, but it also proved that Monterrey is a formidable team. Then the question is do they have what it takes to win the 2027 League Cup? Fans of Monterrey are continuing to hope so.
