[Typhoon Kalmaegi Philippines Vietnam Thailand Laos] Today at 12:29 GMT in Dak Lak and Gia Lia, Vietnam, Typhoon Kalmaegi killed an estimated 127 people missing and at least 114 people dead with most people dead from the central province of Cebu, Philippines. With over 6 airports being closed, it resulted in hundreds of flights being canceled. Heavy flooding also occurred and yielded landslides throughout Vietnam and in the neighboring countries Thailand, Laos, and the island nation of the Philippines. In response, the Vietnamese government deployed 260,000 soldiers to help provide security, help with the recovery of the dead, and to help those that may have been trapped by Typhoon Kalmaegi. Typhoon Kalmaegi was recorded as one of the biggest typhoons to hit Vietnam in recent times.
It was also reported that waves of water reached an estimated 26ft (8m) in the region resulting in a month of rain being dumped on all countries affected according to meteorologists. In the Philippines, President Ferinadad Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency hours before Typhoon Kalmaegi made landfall. While the amount of damage left in the wake of Typhoon Kalmaegi is currently unknown, estimates are set for it to be in the billions when summed up between the four southeast Asian nations.
Philippines Gov. Pamaela Baricuatro made the following statement via phone to the Associated Press:
“We did everything we can for the typhoon but, you know, there are really some unexpected things like flash floods.”
