[Black Girl Tamales Chef Latoya Larkin Houston TX] It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to sit down with Chef LaToya Larkin of Houston Texas as we touched on a variety of topics which ranged from her upbring, to how what and who motivated her to embark on the route of entrepreneurship, and the various barriers that she was confronted with and overcame on her journey to success. Although Houston Texas has not only one of the largest Hispanic populations in the country, but it serves as one the top spots when it comes to Hispanic entrepreneurs especially in the food industry. Within that space black American restaurant owners are yet again finding themselves as a minority.
For Chef LaToya Larkin, being a quadruple minority, she has not only seen the highs of being a Black American woman in Houston Texas’s Hispanic dominated restaurant and culinary industry, but she has experienced racial and discrimination from an unlikely demographic: Hispanics and specifically Mexicans. From being accused of racial appropriation to being a victim of theft and break-in at her restaurant, Chef LaToya Larkin has experienced and overcame it all. The question is why? In short, it's because it's found that she has superior Mexican cuisine than not only her competitors in the Houston restaurant industry, but she has a better culinary product than what the vast number of Mexican restaurants have in Houston and elsewhere in Texas.
There just seems to be no stopping Chef LaToya Larkin as she rises to the top within the Houston culinary industry. Give her interview a listen as she opens up to VEDA Communications LLC. about her life, her culinary expertise, and her thoughts on current world affairs.
