[Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes El Mencho killed joint Mexican-American anti-drug operation] Hours ago, former Mexican Police Officer turned Mexican Drug Lord Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes also known as “El Mencho” and leader of the CJNG (Jalisco New Generation Cartel) was killed in a joint Mexican-American anti-narcotic operation in the western Mexican state of Jalisco. Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes was wounded in a gunfight with federal Mexican authorities but later died while in transit to a hospital. Mexican law enforcement sustained heavy fire while carrying out their operation and during the course of their duties neutralized six armed suspects. Three Mexican law enforcement agents were wounded in the gunfight with CJNG Cartel Members and are expected to survive their injuries.

In the moments leading up to the capture and death of El Mencho, Cartel Members constructed roadblocks made of vehicles and ignited them on fire in an attempt to impede the advancement of Mexican law enforcement officials. Pablo Lemus Navarro who is the governor of the state of Jalisco issues a “Code Red” state of emergency for the security crisis that ensued today within the state. Under the Code Red protocol, citizens were directed to remain inside their homes or places of patronage until the protocol is lifted. Transportation operations within Jalisco were also shut down. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo took to social media and made the following statement:

"In the vast majority of the national territory, activities are proceeding with complete normality”.

Despite President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s comment on social media, Cartel Members executed acts of violence that resulted in local airports freezing operations and adversely impacting tourist destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, Guadalajara, the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon have also been locked down. Air Canada has already begun the temporary cancellation of flights to Puerto Vallarta. The U.S. The Department of State has also issued an advisory to its citizens that are traveling abroad in Jalisco.

“Due to ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity, U.S. citizens in the named locations should shelter in place until further notice”. U.S.  Department of State

It should be noted that an estimated 20 state-owned banks have also been negatively impacted due to acts of violence towards these institutions. School closures have also taken effect starting tomorrow. It is predicted that not only will more violent outbreaks occur in retaliation for the death of El Mencho while in the custody of Mexican law enforcement, but there will be more violence ensued in the street as a race to fill the power vacuum left by El Mancho in the very near future. El Mancho had a $15 million bounty on his head.
