[Syria U.N. emergency security session Israel] Today an emergency Security Council session at the United Nations was called on by Syria as Syrian Arab Republic Permanent Representative Qusay al-Dahhak stated that the repeated aerial bombing campaigns on sovereign Syrian territory and official building which have led to the deaths of dozens of Syrians both civilian and military are not only illegal in the context of the United Nations charter, but Israel's bombing campaign also violates international law, and general Syrian sovereignty. The bombings that occurred Monday which led to the deaths of, and destruction of Syrians and buildings were due to Israel taking upon itself to “defend” the small minority population of Druze that resides in both the general staff building, Golan Heights, the presidential palace, and the capital of Syria, Damascus.
For the Syrian government, the bombing of Israel is seen as a way to divide Syrians based on religious and ethnic grounds. While it is true that the Druze voluntarily enlist in the Israeli Defense Force, for many Syrians that appears to be not only a conflict of national interest, but Syrians who hold this opinion are wondering why the Syrian government is allowing Syrian residents to fight for another military outside the border of Syria. United Nations Security Council Representative Qusay al-Dahhak stated the following during the emergency session:
“The Israeli occupation forces targeted a number of sovereign official buildings in Damascus with several warplanes and drones, including the presidential palace and the headquarters of the General Staff, during peak hours, which resulted in dozens of casualties.”
He also condemned Israel’s bombing campaign on the behalf of the Syrian government as he cited the fact Israel has willfully violated the 1974 Disengagement Resolution which was put in place to allow for the creation of a buffer zone between Israel and Syria in the provinces of, Daraa, the Damascus countryside, and Quneitra. Qusay al-Dahhak also expressed outrage at the fact that Israel has been setting up illegal forward operating bases (FOB) for the IDF, and that Israel has been engaging in the illegal controlling of Syria national resources.
OUR POSITION AT VEDA WORLD NEWS
The fact that the Syrian government had to call an emergency session in the first place means that the Syrian government has not demonstrated that it's strong enough to put and enforce red lines on Israel. What further causes embarrassment of the Syrian government has not authorized any retaliatory measures against Israel’s aggression. Granted, Syria has a new government and is currently seeking to boost its military numbers, but that is in no means a reason to fail to respond in one way or another to Israel’s aggression.
Instead of calling an emergency session at the United Nations, Syria should be working diligently with Turkey and other key regional allies such as Hezbollah, China, North Korea, Russia, and Iran to establish a stronger military presence not only in the country of Syria but in the face of Israel. Another thing that Syria could do is bolster or greatly enhance its nuclear weapons program so that they have some form of deterrence against Israel. It should be noted that the only thing that countries like Israel and countries that comprise the Collective West understand is a force that is equal or greater to them, anything less than that are seen as less than and are considered to be ripe for the taking.
