[Texas Congressional District 18 Democratic Candidate Forum] There's a lot that can be said about the Texas Congressional District 18 Democratic Candidate Forum that was held at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, which is located at 3826, Wheeler Avenue Houston, Texas 77004. When it comes to political debates many people hold on to the notion that all political Candidates would be not only invited but will be represented. What we mean by this is that all political candidates would be given equal time to speak and represent their perspective politically. But what happened yesterday was the absolute opposite. While many older voters were accepting this, the younger democratic voters were largely disappointed.

Yesterday's Forum was hosted by the Houston Defender in partnership with FOX; and that's not an issue as it's commonplace for political organizations to partner with news outlets to boost their reach amongst voters. However, what was disappointing for younger voters and many others in attendance is that the Houston/Harris County Democratic Party “cherry-picked” which Candidates that they wanted voters to see. Not only is this unamerican, but it's considered by many political analysts to be “election interference". If that is true, then Texas Governor Greg Abbott's (R) claim that both Houston and Harris County have the most corrupt political and voting practices in the State of Texas.

Although it can be said that all candidates appeared to have represented themselves well, there were some attendees that felt as if this political debate was just like all the rest that preceded it. The hand-picked Democratic Candidates were as follows:

  • Amanda Edwards

  • Zoe Codor

  • Isaiah Martin

  • Christian Menefee

  • Robert Slater

For the attendees that subscribe to this position, they unanimously felt as if the candidates were not presented with “real and challenging” questions that they felt needed to be addressed. Also, there were complaints that the candidates blamed President Trump and the Republican Party too much for their inability to not only secure votes, but to solve many of the problems that plague not only the voters in Houston and Harris County, but to democratic voters across the United States.

It's been long known that “gun violence" is major social issues in the united states, but when posed with the question regarding how each candidate would address the social issue of gun violence in the united states, each candidate not only answered the question predictably, but in the eyes of many attendees, they failed to espouse any real solutions to fix the social issue of gun violence. Other topics and issues touched on were the long-lasting effects of Hurricane Harvey and how the Candidates would help the citizens of the 18th District, economics and education, and Black American representation in politics.

When it comes to economics, it should be noted that none of the candidates appeared to have a solid plan when it came to combating the rampant number of residents in the 18th Congressional District that are either unemployed or underemployed. In addition to that, it should also be noted that there was no mention of HISD (Houston Independent School District) and all the controversy that surrounds it. Although we at VEDA World News respects all politicians no matter which side they are on, we have to say without a shadow of doubt that maybe the time is right for a new political Third Party or a new Independent Candidate.
