NAACP at the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Take Over of Houston (ISD) Community Meeting
Last night was something of a spectacle when it came to the Houston Community voicing their concerns about the TEA (Texas Education Agency) taking over the board that governors the largest Independent School District in Texas. This community meeting is the third of four community meetings that will be held regard the TEA takeover of the Houston Independent School District.
According to one of the attendees of the community meeting, the TEA is purposely lowering the test standards for the students so that they will have higher grades on paper in order to compete with the students under Common Core. The attendee also stated that when they (TEA) lowers the standardized test for students its directly skews the data in order to make the students look better than they actually are when it comes to standardized test . When we spoke to another attendee, they expressed their concerns that the TEA doesn’t care about the students of HISD.

The attendees of this community meeting were able to personally express their views and concerns directly to the TEA Deputy Commissioner Alejandro Delgado. Outside the concerns of safety, standardize test and the general education of the students of Houston ISD, the issue of race and ethnicity seemed to weight extremely heavy on the hearts and minds of many of the attendees. This was a very big issue outside the scope of socio-economic stratification and disparities that students face; and this let to the TEA being perceived as the “New Jim Crow of Education” in Texas.
During the course of the community meeting, there were people that constructed great questions to TEA Deputy Commissioner Alejandro Delgado; but there were some people that appeared to be “challenged” when speaking with the Commissioner. We are able to report this because there was an attendee that attempted to put some sort of “Voo-doo” on to the Deputy Commissioner during the course of the community meeting. As with any event like this some people took too long to address the Commissioner and when that occurred it appeared to further agitate the crowd.

The NAACP was also in attendance as they held a rally on the steps of the Delmar Stadium 2020 Mangum Road after the end of the event. One thing that I can say is that TEA Deputy Commissioner Alejandro Delgado handled the adverse crowd exceptionally well. Despite being used and overly abused as a social punching bag the Deputy Commissioner was able to answer many of the questions and address many of the concerns of the frustrated attendees. Although being heckled, he upheld his composure. It was also announced that the final of the four community meetings will be held tonight at: March 30 at 6:30 p.m.: Kashmere High School Auditorium, 6900 Wileyvale, Houston, TX 77028.
