[U.S. soldiers killed by ISIS Syria] Today U.S. Central Command reported to the Press that “Two U.S. service members and one U.S. civilian were killed, and three service members were injured, as a result of an ambush by a lone ISIS gunman in Syria. The gunman was engaged and killed.” Currently, the names of the service members and civilians injured have not been released as it is military policy to notify the families of the killed and wounded before identifying the names of those involved to the Press.
The ambush took place in Palmyra within the central region of Homs and the ISIS fighter acted alone and ambushed the American soldiers and Syrian security members as they were conducting “key leader engagement” during their patrol. One of the Syrian civilians that were killed worked with the American military as an interpreter. The latest victims of ISIS attacks were airlifted to the al-Tanf base with lies near the northern border of Jordan and Iraq.
With the aim of engaging in counterterrorism in Syria, many wonder if America has outlived its role in the region even in the midst of the Americans previously sent indications that they were going to reduce their footprint in Syria. America and Israel have long wanted to not only push for regime change in Syria but wanted to control the government of Syria to stop Iran from funneling weapons and money into the hands of Hezbollah and Hamas. While president trump stated that there will be "very serious retaliation" after this latest attack, Syrian interim president and former ISIS leader who has killed American soldier has expressed anger over the actions of ISIS as it is predicted that this latest attack will increase geopolitical tensions and diplomacy with the Americans.
