[Ecuador Daniel Noboa Columbia] With the combination of pressure and fear from the Trump Administration, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has under the guise of “national sovereignty" decided to not only place tariffs on Colombia goods but place a 100% tariff on all Colombian goods and products that would enter the country of Ecuador. The stated reason for the implementation of 100% tariffs on Colombian goods and products by President Noboa was because of  the perceived reality of the Colombian government lacking the implementation of concrete and effective measures regarding border security on the part of Colombia” he went on to state that “the fight against corruption and drug trafficking, are a non-negotiable priority” and  “This measure reaffirms the country’s commitment to protecting its citizens and safeguarding the integrity of its territory”.

The increase of 100% tariffs on Colombian goods comes on the heels of President Noboa applying a previous 50% tariff on Colombian goods and products. Colombian President Gustavo Petro responded that by President Noboa both applying and increase tariffs on Colombian goods and products it would invoke the “collapse” of the Andean Pact, which was a South American bloc pact that was created in May, 1969 as a way to facilitate and increase the co-operational socio-economic and industrial  growth between Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. While President Noboa has not only condemned President Petro for not doing enough to combat drug trafficking and interstate-violence, but it should also be noted that last November, President Petro spearheaded the interdiction and seizure of the largest transnational shipment of narcotics (cocaine) valued at $388 million in the last ten years while in office.

What seems to be fueling the actions of President Noboa is the fact that not only does he align himself with the policies of the Trump Administration, but he supported the highly controversial boat strikes executed by President Trump which killed over 150 people in international waters under the guise of them trafficking narcotics; a claim by the Trump Administration which has failed to be proven. Another probable reason why President Noboa has recently placed 100% tariffs on Colombian goods and products is because he has recently joined President Trump's Shield of the Americas which was created to combat drug cartels and other transnational crimes in the western hemisphere.

President Noboa stated to Press that the government of Ecuador has “made genuine efforts to cooperate with Colombia, even while facing a trade deficit exceeding $1bn annually”.in retaliation, Colombia has not only suspended cross-border energy sales but has imposed its own variation of tariffs on Ecuadorian products and goods. Beyond this, Colombia has also accused the Ecuadorian military of being responsible for the killing of 27 Colombian nationals during its bombing campaign near the border. Adding insult to injury and lending credibility to the push back the Ecuadorian President has been receiving, Mexico was forced to cut diplomatic ties to Ecuador due to its overreach when the Ecuadorian military executed a raid on Mexico's embassy in order to effect an arrest former Ecuadorian Vice-President Jorge Glas who was granted political asylum back in 2024.
