It was reported by sources today that the European Union is seeking to entirely decouple itself from the use of Russian gas imports. The European Union, who’s considered to be in dire straits socially and economically, seems to have a fascination with inflicting self-harm to itself due to its stubborn attitude towards Russia and the relief Russian gas imports could bring to many of the people within the United Kingdom. for the E.U. The self-inflicting harm doesn’t stop there. The European Commission has also stated that it is working on a plan to phase out the import of all Russian LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) and nuclear energy by the end of 2027. The reason cited for this is because the E.U. is seeking to rid themselves of any dependency on Russia.
However, many residents within the European Union feel that the time is now more than ever before to have the opportunity to access Russian gas, LNG, and nuclear energy as it is cheap energy that propels a country forward into the future. From the most basic of electronics, to artificial and other high tech operations, cheap energy is an absolute must. The truth of the matter is many people that reside under the thumb of the E.U. are broke economically speaking. With the E.U. previously importing gas from Russia to the tune of 45% in 2021 to 19% in 2024, the question that’s being asked is where and more even more importantly how is the E.U. going to generate the gas needed to fuel to replenish its energy consumption?
The answer to that is currently unknown. This news of decoupling themselves from Russian ties comes at a time when the E.U. is seeking to give the last of whatever wealth it may have left to Ukraine who has already lost the war against Russia last year according to most estimates from geopolitical analysts. Although the plan to implement the ban on all Russian gas imports hasn’t been voted on yet as the proposal must pass through Parliament, it’s still considered socio-economic suicide by many world leaders the world over except for America that is willing to sell the E.U. gas at a highly inflated cost.
European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen stated that Russian President Putin has “chosen to weaponize energy”, which to many geopolitical pundits is to be considered a flat out lie given the fact that it was the E.U. that allowed America to carry out an operation that led to the blowing up of the Nord Stream Pipeline. Despite the E.U. seeking to decouple itself from Russians gas imports in a failing effort to cripple Russia economically, Russia has been seeking an ever-increasing spike in its gas sales to other countries such as Spain, India, France, and the Netherlands. With the high demands of cheap energy in today's world of artificial intelligence and supercomputing combined with consumer demand, there’s just no way the actions of the E.U. will make one bit of difference to Russia. The world is simply too interconnected for any kind of protest like this from the E.U. or American led sanctions to work.
While the E.U. is busy entertaining the use of alternative forms of energy, it's safe to say that by the time they figure out a solution on how to implement any form of alternative energy efficiently and to scale, the world would have advanced to the point that the E.U. will find itself in a perpetual state of playing catch-up. With the E.U. deciding to forfeit cheap energy today would severely stun the growth and development needed for them to remain relevant and competitive on the world stage tomorrow.
