[Meochea Money Texas Congressional District Lines] VEDA Correspondent Meochea Money reported from the Texas Capital, Austin, to provide coverage on the controversial socio-political issue of Gov. Greg Abbott's plan to prematurely redraw the state’s Congressional District Lines. Legislators and Community activist form many districts from all across the state Texas gathered in Austin, Texas not only protest the redistricting of Congressional Lines but to show solidarity in support of maintaining the previous status quo. The previous status quo was that Congressional Maps were typically redistricted every 10 years to stay in step with the demographic data updates with the U.S. Census.
Speaking with various community activists, politicians and everyday citizens, we were able to obtain their perspective and insights into not only how they feel; but how the social issue of redistricting positively or negatively affects them. We also took the time out to include interviews from the latest University of Houston protest which occurred a couple of weeks ago into the footage as well.
The common perspective of Democrats and people who oppose the passing of such legislation by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, concerning the early redistricting of Congressional Lines as both racist and a systematic way to embark on what they are calling gerrymandering. Beyond this perspective, there seems to be very little known about the Republican perspective surrounding this issue. Whether you agree with the position of either party, here's what people around Houston and people who took to the capital of Texas (Austin) had to say.
