[Rio de Janeiro Brazil drugs 60 killed] Yesterday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an estimated 2,500 police and military personnel executed a drug but that resulted in killing of just over 60 suspects for resisting what Brazilian law enforcement authorities stated: “resisting police action”. It should be noted that four police officers were killed in the line of duty. Although the drug bust was considered successful, there are some civil rights groups within Brazil that are calling for the investigation of the types of policing methods used during the operation. Today's drug bust in Brazil was considered one of the biggest drug bust in recent history as it resulted in a half a ton of drugs and 93 rifles and various other small arms being seized.

Today drug bust in Rio de Janeiro took place in the Complexo de Alemao favelas, a place known as a place sprawling with both criminal activities and the manufacture and distribution of narcotics. The expected raid led to the closing of several schools and the federal university of Rio de Janeiro as police and military authorities urged residents to seek shelter. The execution of this extensive drug raid comes after a year-long investigation into the gang and drug dealers in the favela.

OUR POSITION AT VEDA WORLD NEWS

The favelas in Rio de Janeiro are notorious for both criminal and drug activities, so what occurred today in the Complex de Alemano is no different than what occurs in any other favela in Rio de Janeiro. While it is greatly understood that the drug dealers and their associates are heavily armed and oftentimes outgun the police and military – how criminals like these are handled should also be understood.

What we mean by this is that these are psychologically hardened criminals that will not hesitate to kill police officers and military personnel. Therefore, they should be handled in the most aggressive manner until they demonstrate that they have changed their ways. At the same time, it should also be understood that the issue of gangs and narcotics in the favelas of Brazil is also an extremely complex problem. Traffickers of narcotics often aid the poor with money to buy groceries, health care, and other things that they need to survive. So, the question now becomes: “has the government of Brazil played a huge part in problems that have claimed the lives of so many people in Brazil?"

The answer is both a simple yes and a simple no. It can be said “yes” due to the wide income gap between the rich and the poor and the ability for those in the favela to obtain the necessary resources to elevate themselves out of poverty. But “no” can also be said because everyone has the opportunity to choose not to engage in criminal activity and the manufacture and distribution of narcotics. The reality is that the nation of Brazil is facing a three-sided war which claims the lives of the average citizen, drug dealers, and police/military.
