[Hezbollah Syria] In an effort to appease Israel and America, the Syrian Ministry of Interior in conjunction with the General Intelligence Service has recently stated to the Press that they have arrested several people that are allegedly a part of a Hezbollah backed cell that were planning several assassination plots against senior Syrian leaders. The arrest of these persons of interest occurred in the capital of Damascus as the Syrian government executed what they call a “series of simultaneous security operations” in the Homs, Tartous, Aleppo, and Latakia and that the operation yielded the “dismantling of an organized cell affiliated with the Hezbollah militia, whose members infiltrated Syrian territory after undergoing intensive specialized training in Lebanon”.
It was also reported to Press that the executed operation to capture these persons of interest also led to the confiscation of various explosives, small arms, grenades, RPG’s, surveillance equipment, and other military equipment. Those now in custody were accused of attempting or planning to execute coordinated terror attacks within Syria as well. While Hezbollah has yet to issue a statement to either confirm or deny that these individuals are a part of them, many people within the international community believe that the person arrested by the Syrian government was acting alone in their actions independent of Hezbollah.
While the Syrian government is struggling to win the support of its citizens across the country, it appears that there is some support for the takeover or reform of the Syrian government. Supporting this position is the fact that the Syrian government has yet to stop the perpetual Israeli bombing and air strike campaigns at its southern border as well as put an end to the annexation of its land by Israel in the Golan Heights. For many people in Syria, Hezbollah is seen as more of an organization that is willing to preserve the sovereignty of the state of Syria more so than the official Syrian government.
There has been a growing consensus amongst the collective west that Hezbollah should surrender their weapons and that the Syrian government and its military should oversee that Hezbollah as an organization be disbanded. However, with the Syrian government and its military being not only weak but political compromised, geopolitical analysts safely assume that neither Hezbollah will surrender its weapons, nor will it be disbanded anytime in the distant future.
