[Consumer Price Index August 2025] looking at the major categories for the CPI report for August 2025, it appears to average 2.9% for all categories with a growth average of 0.4%. “Food” stood at 3.2%, “Energy” showed the least growth and stood at 0.2%, and “All Items Less Food And Energy” clocked in at 3.1%. In the “Food” category, “Food At Home” was recorded at 2.7% and “Food Away From Home” stood at 3.9%. drilling down into the “Food” sector, “Meats, Poultry, Fish, And Eggs” showed the highest growth (5.6%). It was followed by "Nonalcoholic Beverages And Beverage Materials”, which stood At 4.5%.
All over categories all stood under 2%, with “Cereals And Bakery Products” at 1.1%, “Dairy And Related Products” 1.3%, “Fruits And Vegitibles”1.9%, and “Other Food At Home” 1.9%. When you look at the “Food Away From Home”, “Full-Service Meals And Snacks” climbed over the 4% mark to 4.6%. “Limited Service Meals And Snacks” stood at 3.2%. when it came to drilling down into the “Energy” sector, “Energy Commodities” tanked to -6.2%. However, “Energy Services” grew to a positive 7.7%. Going deeper into “Energy Commodities", both “Fuel Oil” and “Gasoline (All Types)” fell into the negative with “Fuel Oil” falling to -0.5% and “Gasoline (All Types)” falling to -6.6%.
Going back to “Energy Services”, “Electricity” was up 6.2% and “Natural Gas (Piped)” was also up 13.8%. in the “All Items Less Food And Energy” category, both “Commodities Less Food And Energy" and “Services Less Energy Services” were both up 1.5% and 3.6% respectively. Drilling down into "Commodities Less Food And Energy” the biggest drivers were “Used Cars” and “Tobacco And Smoking Products” which showed the most growth. This was followed by “Alcoholic Beverages” which stood at 1.9% and “New Vehicles” which crept to 0.7% “Apparel” stood flat at 0.2% and no growth was recorded for “Medical Care Commodities" (0.0%).
Lastly, drilling down in the “Services Less Energy Services” all sub-categories were up with “Medical Care Services” taking a slight lead standing at 4.2%, followed by “Shelter” (3.6%), and "Transportation Services” which stood at 3.5%.
