[Italy Giorgia Meloni Israel defense agreement] Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that Italy will not renew its five-year defense agreement with Israel which started in 2006. The cited reason for Italy not renewing its defense agreement stems from Israel firing warning shots towards Italian United Nations Peacekeepers while operating in Lebanon. While the UN Peacekeepers vehicle was shot, there were no reported injuries on the scene. Israel’s ambassador to Rome was summoned to appear before Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In retaliation, Israel summoned Italy's Foreign Minister to Israel Antonio Tajani to appear in Israel. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has been both a publicly outspoken critic and detractor of Israel’s war of genocide against the people of Palestine as well as Israel’s chaotic actions in the region. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani recently stated that Israel's actions in West Asia, towards the people of Gaza specifically, have been “unacceptable”.
This comes after polls were conducted in which 63% of the Italian Electorate had a negative view of both America and Israel. Heightening tension with Italy, American president Trump's recent negative remarks toward Pope Leo XIV has appeared to further cause Italy and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to distance themselves from the Americans and Israel even though Israel has not made a statement towards Pope Leo XIV. The decision for Italy not to renew Israel's defense agreementseems to have delivered a huge blow to Israel who has depended on importation of weapons from western allies for decades. Now with Israel's weapon being depleted at an unsustainable rate, in combination with Italy no longer fulfilling its defense and weapon exports agreements with Israel, many wonder if this would retard Israel's genocidal war towards the Palestinians.
The decision for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to not fulfill Italy's defense agreement with Israel comes at a time when general elections in Italy are 18 months away. So, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's decision to pull out of Italy's defense agreement was a diplomatic one, it was also a strategically geopolitical one that plays a vital role in her chances of being elected as Prime Minister of Italy. This comes on the heels of hundreds of thousands of Italians either protesting or going on worker strikes around the country in response to the Italian government supporting arms sales and fulfilling defense agreements with Israel. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni since the start of the joint Israel-American war of aggression and choice toward Iran has deemed their actions as falling "outside the scope of international law".
